Trifles are great. Really! I wrote all about them in my other Strawberry Banana Trifle post. What I would like to share today is how you can easily turn a trifle which serves 10-14 people into single servings sizes. It’s very easy, and after you read this you won’t believe how easy it will be!
This is it! See, I told you! Anything clear and small will work. When trifles are single serving sizes you typically don’t need the “show” like the larger sizes.
It’s nearly impossible to slap the fruit against the side of the dish to show it off. Instead I laid everything flat so that the layers were still visible. Once I realized what I could use to make single serving sizes of trifles I was overwhelmed with the possibilities!
I used custard cups, which were great because they came with lids which made for easy transport. Once I got where I needed to be I just took the lids off and plomped some sugar-free whipped cream on top. So you’re probably asking, “well, what can I use”?
Stemless wine glasses, wine glasses, margarita glasses, tumblers, and even mini trifle dishes are out there! I even debated on using some of my jars that I use for canning. As long as the shape is generally oval or rectangular you’ll be able to include all layers evenly, though this would eliminate martini glasses. If you don’t care about showing off the layers than you can use anything at all, bowls, ice cream bowls, or plastic-ware. Honestly when hubby and I were eating up the leftovers we just used mugs.
A short blog this time, but I have had quite a number of searches and questions related to this. Trifles are amazing, but for a small get-together they are a tad impractical. Using what you have in the house is a great way to save money, show off unique glassware you may have, and serve a delicious dessert!
If you have horrible dishes and still want to serve a nice trifle with a tight budget I would recommend heading to a Goodwill or another type of second-hand store or an antique store. The dishes don’t have to match, in fact it would make it fun and easy to serve to guests!
Let your creativity run wild!

Tasted great, too … thanks, Jen!!
This recipe is a keeper! The Chef Extraordinaire (and author of this blog) made the full-sized version for a get-together this past spring. It made what seemed like a huge amount but there wasn’t a spoonful left by the time everyone left. It’s light, cool, and surprisingly healthy based on the ingredients list. Definitely 5-stars for this one, and thanks for sharing!
Thanks Jeff! You’re too kind with all the compliments, I can’t wait to try another one and bring by for you guys to “review” for me! Maybe I should post your review at the top of my blog for everyone to see!
