Goodbye Winter/Spring

5 May

Technically we didn’t have a spring this year. Colorado sure varies every single year, it’s so unpredictable that even natives don’t know whether to expect snowstorms in June or not. Well, as I sit here in 80+ degree weather, I’m here to say farewell to Winter and Spring, because we didn’t have a spring. It’s been warm since March, so I think it’s safe to say we won’t be having any last-minute snow storms. So here are photos from our last major snowstorm waaaaaaaaaaaay back in February!

Taking a lovely walk a day after a snowstorm

The walking path

I must be getting rusty, all I know is that these little birds are some kind of finch! Maybe a Rosy Finch?

Everything seems more peaceful when it snows

BAM!

Kitty says bye-bye to Winter too.

Well, there is my ode to Winter/Spring. Now comes Summer. HELLO SUMMER!

The race to finish before Christmas….

27 Oct

Can it be done? Can I make it? I’m so worried, what will happen if I fail? Will people laugh at me?

My stocking in progress

:-) Nah, I’m not that worried, and I think people laugh at me anyways. Though I am starting to feel the time crunch, I really want to finish this Christmas stocking for this year. I always forget how long cross-stitch takes, though it is turning out better than I expected. Kudos Dimensions (a popular needlework company), they’ve done a really great job with this pattern.

Certain colors use more threads which gives dimension to the piece. I also love the amount of shading, the white snow pops but not too much. I also love how the birds use the cross-stitch while almost everything else uses the half-stitch. While my last project was impressive enough, it didn’t have as much dimension as this one does. The entire bottom row of snow took me about 7 hours yesterday, which includes distractions, but still. That’s a long time!

Anyways, what is distracting me from completing this project in time for Christmas is knitting! Yep, I am hooked. Literally! Bwaahaha!

This is called the Lazy River pattern

Whoever created this pattern called it the “lazy river” because it was so easy to do, however I find that it requires my attention almost as much as cross-stitch! I love how it looks and I used a “shimmer” yarn so it will be an awesome Christmas gift for a certain someone!

The "one row scarf" pattern

This is considered bulky yarn, and I love it! I love how soft it is to work with, how thick the scarf feels, and how quickly I can knit with it. This scarf is also a Christmas gift for a certain someone and I cannot wait until I finish it!

My new Tomato Frogs

9 Mar

You can see by the title that post is in no way related to food! Unless you like to eat crickets and worms (yuck). I just wanted to share some new additions to the family! I actually got them a few months ago, but for me there is always some kind of window after buying frogs to make sure that they will not only survive, but thrive! So far these guys are doing excellent and are eating me out of house and home! They haven’t “talked” yet, but I think it’s just because they’re young and still getting used to things.

This was right after I got them...you can tell because the tank doesn't have water spot stains everywhere!

One is obviously in the corner and the other one is buried but you can just barely see his nose sticking out of the dirt!

Chillin' in the da pool

I still don’t have names for these cuties. So far one is called “the more reddish one” (the one to the right) and the other is called “the yellowish one” (the one on the left). I dig them up about once a week for feeding and I stick them in the water dish to chill out.

Here is The More Reddish One and I just LOVE the black marks underneath their eyes

I am shocked that there really isn’t a lot of good information about tomato frogs. I had some before these guys and it was all trial and error and talking to frog experts as I ran into them. Then…I found a frog forum! YES! It’s called Talk to the Frog. Awesome, huh? These guys have been helpful, they’re knowledgeable, and I’ve been able to talk to other people who own tomato frogs.

I also love the bright white undersides

There is nothing too complicated about owning tomato frogs, but it is essential to know what you’re getting into before buying any kind of amphibian/reptile. These types of pets are quite a bit different from a betta or a guinea pig.

This is The Yellowish One soaking up the indirect afternoon sunlight

I’m not saying that taking care of these guys are easy, but a beginning amphibian owner could get the hang of caring for tomato frogs pretty easily! I’ll stop blabbering for now, but I am just so happy and proud that these guys seem to be doing so well!

As a disclaimer I just want to add that before purchasing ANY animal, please be sure to do the research and be prepared for any medical emergency that can happen. Even though I used to work at a pet store, I would advise going through a specialty shop for amphibians/reptiles. No matter if you just have questions or are ready to purchase, those guys have the knowledge and expertise (or at least they should)! Also, join forums and ask questions!

Tough to see, but awesome photo :-)

A break from baking – Family Ski Trip!

22 Jan

Hey Folks! I bet you didn’t even realize that I was gone, but sure enough, I was! We were away on our Annual Family Ski Trip to a popular ski town called Breckenridge. We had such a blast and I hope you don’t mind if I share a few photos with you!

Road Trip!

22 May

I bet you’re all wondering where I have been…well worry no more! I’m back! I took a nice vacation to go see my friend graduate from nursing school in New York. We decided to do a nice road trip home rather than just drive straight through. I definitely needed a vacation to wind down after all the ranger training I went through! I was physically and mentally exhuasted, and even though my newfound routine would be ruined I was ready to take a break. How could I be ready to take a break, it’s only May!?! Oh well.

I started by flying out to Rochester to meet up with my friend and her mom for her graduation. We got the grand tour, with the little time that we did have! We saw her school, her house, met her roommates/friends, and finally watched her walk across the stage. My friend took us to some great places to eat, needless to say I haven’t eaten so much food in a very long time! We went to a really good crepe restaurant, I acutally got some creme brulee oatmeal…SO GOOD!

Walking off our big breakfast by a canal that was behind the Crepe restaurant

Her graduation came and went like a flash. It was in the Kodak Theater, which was simply stunning! I sure wish MY graduation was in that theater rather than a ballroom…

I accidentally focused on the ceiling rather than the people - which made out for a very interesting picture

Unforgettable

After graduation we packed up her bedroom and loaded up her teeny tiny Rav4 (although it wasn’t TOO tiny because we fit everything in there) and headed off to Canada! It was only a 3 hour drive, but between sitting in traffic at border patrol and just finding our hotel it took about 5 hours! Once we saw the view from our room though, it was all ok…

View from our room - not too shabby, even for a nature gal!

Main part of the city - the touristy part

These are statues of flying geese in the Toronto Eaton Centre - the Canadians were sure proud of the geese

Love this picture - did not intend to the get the birds in this shot :-)

After Toronto we drove to Michigan where we stayed for a few more days to visit with my friends family and friends. We were very well taken care of, good food and a great place to lay our heads down!

This is actually the neighbors house, but just wanted to show the water, the piers, and the yards.

Stunning sunset for our first night!

The sunset on our second night was more beautiful than the first...

Stunning, breathtaking, amazing...call it what you want!

After Michigan it was time to head back to good ol’ Colorado. We didn’t really stop except for bathroom breaks or fueling up. We drove through Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and FINALLY Colorado.

One final grand sunset, thanks to Wisconsin! Or was that Minnesota...the days blur together

The last 2 hours flew by so fast because we actually knew where we were going without using a map! Even though we had a blast on the road, we were so happy to be home and in our own beds. I will miss the water slide at the hotel in South Dakota, and I’ll miss the deluxe beds in Wisconsin. I won’t miss scraping bugs off the windshield and I won’t miss eating so much greasy and fattening food.

Hurray! I’m home!

Pingree Park Cont’d

4 Nov
Well I promised a blog talking more about Pingree park so here it is (before I forget)!  Just to bring everyone up to speed as far as what Pingree Park is, it’s basically a month long class up in a very remote area Northwest of Fort Collins. Natural Resource majors get to memorize grasses, forbs, shrubs, trees, and animals. We also got to learn about compassing and GPS and some of the ecosystems found in Colorado.

I’ll be honest, I flat out did NOT want to go. I procrastinated for 3 years until, finally, I could not postpone it any longer. I was a super-senior and getting married a month after the class was offered, so I knew it would be harder to take the class once I got married. I didn’t want to go mainly because of how inconvenient it was. A month long class, in the middle of nowhere (they only had one computer with SLOW internet and no cell service), and it cost me a total of about $3,000. Of course after missing a months rent, paying for credit card bills, having someone take care of my pets it would have cost me about $4,000! I hated Pingree Park from the bottom of my heart and I even looked into other classes that I could take to replace Pingree Park. Those classes would have pushed my graduation until the following year!

My final year it just so happened that I moved back into my parents house so I could do an internship with Jefferson County. So. I sucked it up and registered. I continued to dread this class because of how intense it sounded, and the parties, and late night studying. My fiance was none too pleased that I would be gone for a month, but he knew it had to be done. Finally, the day came and I packed my bags and drove the hour and a half to get to Fort Collins. I decided to save gas and wait for a shuttle van which took another hour to get there. From campus it was another hour and a half to get to Pingree Park. I chatted with a few other people in the van, just small talk really. I zoned in and out as I thought about who my roommates were going to be. Were they going to be partiers? Potheads? Lazies? Am I even going to pass this class? How am I going to plan for the wedding while I’m up here? As these worries and fears crossed through my mind, a mountain top caught my eye and this is what I saw…

The mummy from Pingree Park road

This is what I saw when I drove up

Sheer. Beauty.

I couldn’t help but smile! I suddenly felt all of my worries and fears and insecurities fall away and I knew that I would fall in love with this place. Dropping everything to be away for a full month was difficult, but it wasn’t impossible. Once I got up there I couldn’t wait to go hike and explore and bask in the beauty of the mountain’s shadow.

One of girls in the van turned out to be one of my roommates and we tried to find our cabin together. She was a hyper but enthusiastic Watershed major who played in band. I breathed a sigh of relief! My other roommate was a gamer and a Wildlife major (yeah, we’ll see if she even uses it). Whew! Another sigh of relief, another nerd! I was even more estatic when I saw what the cabins looked like!

Rather than this being an inconvenience, it was turning into an adventure! As the days went on I started going to bed earlier and earlier because of how jam packed our days were. They even had extra things going at night and for the first week I decided not to do them because I didn’t want to wear myself out. By the second or third week I thought “I’m only up here once…DO IT”!

We learned about ecosystems, communities, wildlife, vegetation, and forest management. I was in heaven! I loved being fully summersed in natural resources and it was all the better that I was in the middle of nowhere. I didn’t even miss the internet or my cell phone! I was FREE! I saw all kinds of wildlife, moose, deer, weasels, nighthawks….you get the idea. We learned how to measure tree stands in a forest, vegetation cover in riparian areas, and the delicate nature of alpine zones.

I did alot of extra activities like hiking and chainsawing. Yes, chainsawing! It was alot of fun even though it was very very hard work. We even felled a tree or two :-D

I did a TON of hiking as well! I was able to experience wildlife, great trails, and even getting a little lost!

I even had a close encounter with a moose! I had to hide behind a telephone pole (they have poor eyesight) and thankfully he just walked right by! I ran so fast from that spot back to the cabins and I could hear him bellowing in the distance.

I went back the next day and found his track right on the trail!

To summarize, this class started out being the thorn in my side, but ended up being the best experience of my life! I wanted to live up there and I was heartbroken when I finally had to leave. The class was stressful, the tests were terrible, and some of my classmates drove me crazy….but those things didn’t matter when I was in the shadow of the mountain.

Pingree Park

1 Aug

Well I am 2 weeks into my 4 week program at Pingree Park! This class is very intense, if it wasn’t for the classwork I would probably be living up there by now! Here are some photos and I’ll be writing about the experience soon enough…

This is called the "mummy". If you look you can see a head, arms folded over, and on some days you can see feet!
